Here’s a list of a few simple things to keep in mind while you’re writing blog posts. Even though this list doesn’t cover every technique, it’s still a great starting point to build your SEO.
How to Maximize Your Blog SEO
Focus on long-tail keywords
Many marketers believe you should use as many keywords as possible, but that can actually hurt your SEO. Instead, it’s best practice to focus on one or two long-tailed keywords:
- Long-tailed keywords are longer, more specific keywords.
- Long-tailed keywords help bring more qualified visitors to your website.
It’s vital you use these keywords naturally throughout your blog post. Forcing keywords makes your content sound stilted and it turns off your readers.
There are 5 essential areas where you should include keywords:
- Title: Not only do your readers see the title first, but so do search engines. Google usually cuts off text after 65 characters, so make sure to get your keyword in the first 65 characters.
- Headers: Headings are important for readability and SEO, and Google uses headings to analyze content. Be sure to include a keyword in your H1 heading.
- Body: Keywords should be used naturally throughout the body of the blog post. Be careful not to use keywords too much. Keep it reader-friendly. Keywords should make up about 1-2% of your text.
- URL: Make sure you include a keyword in your URL. It’s the first thing search engines use to determine your content.
- Meta-descriptions: Meta-descriptions are what readers see on a search engine page. They provide a short description of that page, and help readers decide if they’ll click your content or not.
All blogs should have at least one image, but images alone won’t give you good SEO. Google doesn’t look for images. Google looks for image with alt text, which tells Google what an image is about. It’s also helpful if an image can’t be found. Instead of displaying a broken image, your blog post will show the alt text.
Upload images with accurate and descriptive names. Instead of uploading an image with the name “IMG03022017,” go for something better and rename it as “latte-art-café.”
Minimum of 300 words
Blog posts should be at least 300 words, but you don’t have to stop there. Longer content will achieve better search rankings. Ideally, you want to aim for 1,000 words or more. Lengthy text gives Google more opportunities to determine what your content is about.
A critical caveat! Longer is not always better. Long blog posts need to be structured and easy to read. If readers can’t easily read your article, they have a bad experience, and that will hurt your SEO ranking. Be sure to use headings, links, and pictures with longer content.
Use links to previous content
By linking back to previous content on your website, you keep readers on your blog. They’ll have additional content to read, which boosts your credibility on the subject. Linking will also increase your ranking in Google.
